Building Bird Safe

PSA is a founding partner, with Maine Audubon and University of The Southern Maine, working to address the problem of bird window strikes in Maine.

BirdSafe Maine is a collaboration between Maine Audubon, PSA, and the University of Southern Maine to address the problem of bird window strikes in Maine. We host walks during migration season, lectures and presentations, workshops and site visits.

In 2022 we welcomed our first Resiliency Fellow through AmeriCorps, Cady Netland, to tackle this topic full time. Cady is working with architects, builders, suppliers, and homeowners on helping to identify problems and develop solutions. She is also developing an interactive StoryMap that shows all the bird-safe projects in Maine to date.

The City of Portland has drafted Building Bird Safe Legislation. A current draft can be found here

And, the State of Maine just passed legislation, LD 670, introduced by Scarborough Rep. Sophia Warren, that will require the incorporation of bird-safe design into public buildings. This legislation makes Maine just one of three states with statewide bird-safe legislation! BirdSafe Maine, the state and partner organizations will help to develop the guidelines.
